Still on probation

Bailey's six month probation period is up in September, but I may have to extend it to a year.

You know how some pets  employees start out strong, working hard and trying to impress their new owners employers?  And you think "I am so lucky to have found that pet employee!

Baiey stalking her prey

And then you see signs that they aren't getting the job done...
You know, signs like when you walk outside to put meat on the grill, and then turn back around to go back into the house and you hear CRUNCH under your feet... and you look down and there is a mouse flailing because you stepped on it.  How I wished I had been wearing tennis shoes, rather than sandals - but at least I wasn't barefoot!  What if that mouse had crawled across my foot.  Yikes!  Once I finished screaming and shaking, I looked for the lazy cat employee who didn't do her job.

Bailey lounging in a rocking chair

Just as I feared, she had become complacent - and didn't even care that I knew it!

Bailey sleeping in the rocking chair

Sleeping on the job is a firing offense - don't you think?

I think I'll give her one more chance.  She does provide me with a lot of love and who knows how many little critters would be running around my porch if she wasn't around.  Bailey's a keeper after all.  But please... no more mice!

Bailey

No, I did not take a picture of the dead mouse.  And yes, Jim had to get rid of it for me.   Yuck!

Oh I do hope you extend Bailey's probation! She's a pretty kitty and looks like a lovable kitty too. Don't they just look adorable when they're sleeping? LOL about the mouse! My kitty would probably just play with it if she ever saw one. I can't let her go outside, tho, because of the traffic. Cute post, Deanna!

but she is so cute!! I love her sleeping on the chair; that chair was definitely made for her!! I think I would have to move if I stepped on a mouse like you did. When we first moved in here, there were several mice in the garage (caught successfully by traps, LOL). I remember walking n the garage with trepidation but thankfully never saw one. They just move to quick for me!

Do extend Bailey's probation period! I'm sure she will eventually become a better mouser!

Sleepy Kitty Bailey
Stalking through the forest
Scooping up the field mice
And bopping them on the head
Down came the Good Fairy, and she said
"Sleepy Kitty Bailey
I don't want to see you
Scooping up the field mice
And bopping them on the head.
I will give you three chances,
And if you don't behave, I will turn you into a Goon!"

Iggy! Are you telling me that it is the Good Fairy's fault that Bailey is not doing her job? Little Rabbit FooFoo is probably very upset right now, having been replaced by Sleepy Bailey!

I used to have a cat that "presented" me with mouse gifts all the time--day and night. (We lived in the country and had a lively mouse population.) I praised Smokey, loved her up, admired her gift, and waited an appropriate amount of time before disposing of it so as not to belittle her hunting prowess. Smokey proudly laid a dead mouse at my feet while cooking dinner, on the toilet, while watching TV, eating Thanksgiving dinner (freaked out several guests), and I had to watch where I stepped with my bare feet when I got up in the morning because there was often a furry gift right beside the bed. I am glad I am not squeamish. ;)

Some cats are just much better hunters than others. Some don't like to actually kill unless they are starving. But they are great company and a relaxed purring cat will lower your blood pressure...if you haven't just stepped on a mouse, that is.

I say, keep Bailey around, if for no other reason than she just looks happy. Maybe get a rabbit to bop the field mice, instead?

Oh come on! YOU KNOW you're keeping her, lol!!! And she probably knows it too!!! I would have screamed too, so my condolences on that score.

Deanna this is incredibly funny! Bailey is a pretty girl, ummmm employee. Boy did she land her kitty self a great home, ummm job. That second picture of Bailey cracks me up what with her supposed to be on mouse patrol and all. I wonder if it counts if she is dreaming about chasing mousies. "Love to eat them mousies...mousies what I love to eat! Bite they little heads off, nibble on they tiny feet!"--B.Kliban. I love Kliban's Kitties-http://www.eatmousies.com/home.html

Man I am glad you decided she is a keeper!

If we're lucky, we find a dead mouse on the steps or the porch. If we're unlucky, we find bits of dead mouse in the house. If we're really unlucky, we don't find the dead mouse in the house -- we just smell it.

LOL this post is funny. My cat Gracie is so lazy in her getting old age, she is definitely getting fat and the other day I caught her out there just lounging on the little sidewalk and watching the squirrels eat up her food out of her food bowl LOL

Hi Deanna,

Oh, how I've missed you. Sorry for the ridiculously long absence. I'm finding my blog groove again and I'm so happy I didn't miss Bailey's reprieve!

Sending you giant hugs my friend,
