This barn, spotted along MO Hwy 179, is part of a “clothesline of quilts”, marking barns that are at least a half-century old. Quilt block patterns are painted on 8-by-8-feet lightweight metal panels and hung on the face of a barn, where they can easily be seen from roadways.
My friendly postman brought me a present yesterday, sent my way by a long time blog friend. The present is full of charm that I cannot wait to share in the weeks to come. You see, my friend extended an offer that is too good to pass up. Talk about charm... he is full of it. But more on that later.
I believe this is the flying geese quilt pattern. How about it quilting friends. Am I right?

Mom I sat one morning watching tv and a quilting show came on....he only quilting show i have ever seen LOL....and that is the type of quilt the lady made and she did call it a fly geese quilt...or something like that LOL
I really like this red barn! The quilt block on the side makes it special!
Goodness. That is quite a paint job! I guess all that "red paint" gets kind of boring when you are rolling it on!

so cool. i had no idea that each quilts has a name... that is so cool!! i need to do some research & find out more right away. that is fun. guess there is more of a reason as to why the farmer has it there in the 1st place. (:
I don't know WHO dreamed up the idea of putting quilt block designs on the sides/ends of barns, but whomever they were I thank them!
I see these all over the place.
There is even a HOUSE around the corner from here with one under its eaves.
That is interesting about the quilt design on the barn; it does "brighten" it up a bit! I'm off next week on vacation; maybe we'll have to "throw" the corgi in the car and take a car ride and see if I can find a barn here to be part of this fun meme. In the meantime, I always do enjoy the farms you post Deanna :)

Deanna....I am so jealous of you gals that keep coming up with the quilt barns. I have two or three when on a trip but we are past them before I can click the shutter. This is a beauty. That great paint job and the shiny tin roof look fine. genie
Just love these quilt barns. I remember as a kid seeing all kinds of advertisements and murals painted on barns as we drove across country. I'm glad to see this new trend.

I was reading somewhere that folks back in the day of the underground railroad would hang quilts outside - the pattern told the illiterate if "the coast was clear". I wonder if this is an extension of that.

The quilt pattern on the barn really does make it stand out. I do believe that is a "flying geese" pattern. Anything with those triangles in almost any pattern can be considered "flying geese".

Deanna...To answer your question. I do use PSE10, but I not finding it to be real easy especially with the reversed texture placement. I wolfed for hours on that shot and it still leaves a lot to be desired. I am wondering if the photo has to be lighter or darker to work properly. The ones on Pixel Dust Photographic Art are heavenly. Maybe one of these days I will get the hang of it. genie

We have barn quilts in our area -- the blue and white parts are flying geese -- the entire block may have another name.
